This award has been established by the Queen's Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE Queen's) – in honour of BSc (Eng.) 2002 graduate Dr. Aba Mortley (MSc, PhD). These students wanted to recognize the incredible work that Dr. Mortley has undertaken in terms of bringing forward the discussion of equity, diversity and inclusion and also acting as such a strong advocate for the Black community, both within Queen's and throughout the city of Kingston.

The Dr. Aba Mortley National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Queen's Chapter Award will be granted on the basis of proven leadership and involvement in school or community activities and demonstrated financial need to students entering the first year of any undergraduate degree program in Smith Engineering. First preference will be given to students who self-identify as Black Canadians. Second preference will be given to students who self-identify as a visual or racialized minority.

Should funding minimums not be met, gifts will be allocated to Smith Engineering Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigenization Fund.
